Law Enforcement Officers ARE THE AMERICAN SOLDIERS OF THE HOME FRONT!! Until they are treated as such, things will not change much. Unfortunately, with the influx of citizens to the United States originally from (or influenced by) countries where the police tend to be considered a type of "organized" criminals (or some semblance thereof), Law Enforcement Officers of The United States are thought by those persons to be the same. So, until we devise a way to get the majority of United States citizens to think of Law Enforcement Officers as the soldiers of the home front, it is going to be a "tough row to hoe". I have taught Law Enforcement Officers for years that they are to be the citizen's (or public works employee's, or whoever else's) "Safe Place". In other words, if you or any other person runs up to a police officer and says "I need a safe place" the Officer should be willing to say "Well fall in behind me, because this is as far as the bad guy is going to get!". Being that "Safe Place" deserves a lot!
If that wasn't enough... As a Law Enforcement Officer on patrol, you have to regularly keep an eye on your back because of the ever increasing possibility of an assailant trying to assault you. Then, when back in the office, you unfortunately have to keep an eye on your back because of the increasing possibility of a co-worker "stabbing you in the back" for their own personal advancement. Now we get this added, where our employing government entity is trying to take our retirement. And they wonder why it is so hard to get quality personnel to do this job.

While public safety retirees were included in this, many others were as well. While I admire public safety employees (I have supervised them and worked as a police volunteer post-retirement), I think it is a mistake to seek special privileges beyond those of the mass of public employees. Public safety is simply too small a slice of the population to be safe. Perhaps public retirees are as well but it is a much bigger group than just public safety. Regrettably, the public safety unions supported the legislation that created this mess.

Absolutely correct about the issue. Unfortunately, I feel that this problem (along with many others) goes back to the the basic phiosophy of our society that most private citizens do not like Law Enforcement Officers. When they need them, they want them there immediately, without any delay. Then, when the Officer has handled the situation, the citizen wants the Officer gone as quickly as they wanted them to arrive. These budget votes that your article refers to are affected by citizens with the same feelings.

Our biggest problem right now is with "Legal" drugs. Prescription drugs and synthetic drugs (K2, spice) are by far the most abused by high school students in the North Cobb area. Routinely, kids move from Xanax to Heroin due to the street value of both drugs. Xanax and like drugs pull $50 a pill while heroin goes for $20-$30 a bag in the Bluffs. Legalization is not the answer...Great point Lance.
